From the very start of his career, Jean-Jacques Rombouts showed a keen interest in medical education and the training of specialists. An orthopaedic surgeon like his father, who had been a student of Lambotte, he turned towards an academic career with a particular focus on paediatric orthopaedics. He continued his academic career as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at UCL, where he implemented the reform of medical studies in line with the Bologna Declaration. He also served as Head of the Orthopaedic Department
