Dr Lauwerys graduated with a degree in medicine from KULeuven in 1993. He completed his specialisation in rheumatology and a PhD in immunology at UCLouvain, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for Immunology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre in Dallas, Texas. His clinical and scientific career has focused on the management and better understanding of systemic and inflammatory rheumatic diseases. In the early 2000s, he also established a specialist paediatric rheumatology clinic at the Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc, a field to which he is particularly committed. Dr Lauwerys served as President of the Royal Belgian Society of Rheumatology. He is the author and co-author of numerous scientific publications.
